Destination races are increasing in popularity. Long gone are the days when travel was seen as a vacation from running. Instead, running has become the vacation. With a variety of race distances on offer, from 10km to full marathon, the Netherlands is an ideal location for an autumn running vacation.
Sunday September 13 is the 6th edition of the Rotterdam Half Marathon. Many world records have been made and broken on this very flat, traffic-free course. This year that tradition is expected to continue as world record holder Samuel Wanjiru and fellow Kenyan Sammy Kitwara battle it out on the streets of Rotterdam.
If you are not an elite athlete, don’t be intimidated. Be inspired. Just as world class runners choose this course, with nary an incline in sight, because it is the perfect place to run a fast, record-setting race and boost their confidence as well as their ranking, the same benefits can be reaped by the novice runner, the personal record seeker or the traveler who wants to add a little adventure to his trip. For those who want less race and more destination, opt for the 10 km run instead.
The Dam tot Dam Loop 25th jubilee is September 20. The 16 km (10 mile) course goes from Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam to the center of Zaandam, passing through the IJ tunnel that connects the “dams” of these two cities. As part to the jubilee celebration, the Dam tot Dam by night will take place on Saturday September 19. The addition of this one time event, in which 25,000 additional registrants are entered, will make the Dam tot Dam Loop one of 2009’s biggest running events.
