The third Tuesday in September is Prinsjedag in Holland. This very important day on the Dutch calendar is when Queen Beatrix addresses a joint session of the Dutch lower and upper houses of Parliament. The Speech from the Throne in the Ridderzaal (Knight’s Hall) of the Binnenhof (Inner Court) in The Hague formally opens the annual parliamentary session. This event results in area schools and roads being closed, public transportation schedules being altered and throngs of people lining the streets to get a glimpse of the queen as she travels from the Noordeinde Palace to the Parliament building in the Gouden Koets (Golden Carriage).
