This weekend Rotterdam hosts the jewel in the Holland festival crown, the North Sea Jazz Festival. Declared the best jazz festival in Europe by JazzTimes magazine, it is also the biggest, with just about every genre represented, from New Orleans, swing and bop, to fusion, electronic and avant-garde jazz. Gospel, blues, hip-hop, soul, latin and world music will be included as well.
Artists slated to appear at the festival this year include B.B. King, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spaulding, Jamie Cullum, Burt Bacharach, Lee Ritenour, Joshua Redmen, Wynton Marsalis, James Taylor and Marcus Miller and Dutch darling Candy Dulfer.
Each year the festival features an artist in residence who performs on all three days, each time with a different line up. This year’s artist, saxophonist John Zorn is known for the wide range of musical genres that he covers and is sure to be a highlight of the festival.
Another highly anticipated performance is “Sing the Truth – The Music of Nina Simone” performed by Dianne Reeves, Lizz Wright and Simone, Nina Simone’s daughter. The tribute, also featuring the original Nina Simone band, will cover Nina Simone’s repertoire from I Put A Spell On You to Four Women.
In addition to spectacular musical performances, the festival features an art show with jazz related art and photography. The theme for this year’s art show is Women Touched By Jazz, and includes jazz inspired works by up and coming women in the art world. The photography exhibition will feature dozens of photographs by legendary Francis Wolff in honor of Blue Note’s 70th anniversary as well as the works of prominent music photographers such as Peter van Breukelen and Rob Verhost .
The North Sea Jazz Festival runs from July 10 through July 12. For more information visit the festival website.
