The wail of racing engines, the sound of the crowd, the sleek purpose-built cars in the pits at Pacific Raceways, all say its time for Pacific Northwest Historics racing! This weekend will be full of 3 days of racing at the 21st Annual Pacific Northwest Historics Auto Races, July 3 – July 5, 2009 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA. SOVREN (Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts) puts on the races to benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital and the uncompensated care they provide to children. Children's Hospital ensures quality medical care for all children of the Northwest, regardless of their families’ ability to pay
Vintage racecars are often very rare and very valuable, so seeing them on the track, at speed, is a pleasure not easily found. Favorites include Ferraris, Lotuses, Cobras, Porsches, Austin Healeys and some less recognizable names like Elva, Ginetta, and McLaren. Most are in mint condition and many attain speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour. In addition, more than 250 vintage and collector cars from many local car clubs will be on display in the Car Corral.
There are not many places you can get up close and personal with cars of this sort. At major races the pits are closed and the audience only sees the cars on the track. At Pacific Northwest Historics races, the paddock is open and the drivers are often willing to talk about the cars they love. In this setting, they are car enthusiasts getting together to display their cars and talents and compete with other historical racers.
The SOVREN Guild of Children's Hospital began in 1989, and its first contribution was $7500. Last year, SOVREN contributed $785,000 to Children's. Overall, SOVREN has contributed more than 7.2 million to Children's Hospital. This fundraising by racing has proven to be a successful way for racers, fans, and sponsors to support the work of Children's Hospital.
The Pacific Northwest Historic Races will have a very special grid for the featured race group at this year’s event. The cars of IMSA and The SCCA Trans Am series, the Cameros, and Mustangs, and Firebirds that were such crowd pleasers, will once again bring thunder to the track, and excitement to the crowd. Unlike Formula One, or Indy, or the specialty cars created just for racing, the Trans Am series was about cars you might have owned, Merkurs, Corvettes, Mustangs, and Cameros, some backed by Ford or GM.
This year the Historic Races will be Celebrating Chevrolet Racing in honor of the 100th anniversary of GM, and the 97th anniversary of Chevrolet, so expect to see plenty of Corvettes and Cameros on the track.
Vic Edelbrock, Jr. will be this year’s Event Celebrity Driver. The name Edelbrock is synonymous with performance, their manifolds, cylinder heads and camshafts, have been part of the car in the winner circle too many times to count. Edelbrock is credited with building the family owned business into a multi-million dollar plus corporation and an industry leader in state-of-the-art automotive performance for racecars and street cars.
"An active participant in vintage racing, Vic races a 1963 Corvette Sting ray, 1959 Lister and a 1969 302 Boss Mustang in vintage races. Says Bonnie Yonker, press relations for the race.
The races are held at Pacific Raceway, in Kent (click for directions). Gates open at 8AM, racing starts at 9:30 and goes all day! For full information see the Vintage Races web site.
