On any given afternoon at a local TV news station in New York, 26 year-old Adam Seigel can be found - before his shift as a director - blow drying the hair of various news anchors and reporters.
"It relaxes me and it's really therapeutic," says the behind-the-scenes TV guy who then switches personas and runs the digital board that brings you the news. Adam is the epitome of a Gen Y'er. He's a free spirit, is ready and willing to explore more than one career and contends being happy at work, trumps the almighty dollar.
"I've been hooked on television news since high school, it's all I wanted to do as long as I can remember," he told me in a recent interview (while blow drying my hair in his own fabulous style, wavy and sleek) but then added, he's always had a love for hairstyles. He would roam magazines for new looks try on his mother since he was a youngster.
Adam went to college for TV which landed him in the newsroom right out of school. He quickly went from editing news stories to directing the shows in which they appeared. With no formal training as a hairdresser he continued to hone his latent talent doing his mom's hair - until his lucky break.
"I was directing a news cast and the anchor was complaining about her hair during a commercial break," says Adam, who then mustered up the guts to volunteer to blow dry the anchor's hair the next morning - on his time. From there, word of his skill spread like wild fire. Now you have to take a number to sit in his chair.
The station management expressed their support of Adam exploring his creative side. He's now hoping to head to school part-time to get his hairdresser license, while continuing to work as a director at the news station.
Adam's career continues to expand in TV news while he pursues his other passion - creating a beautiful 'do. His hairstylist career is growing alongside his television career with just a minor change - we now call him "Adamo." It suits him well.
