Last year, I had the pleasure to interview Michael Wardian before the 2008 Marine Corps Marathon in October. I've been following Michael's running career for some time and his continued success is quite inspiring. Michael is a "regular guy" with a full-time job, a supportive wife and two young kids. He also happens to be a phenomenal runner whose talent allows him to run race after race placing in the top 10, if not first.
Since our interview, Michael has been quite busy. He ran several races, including the Marathon des Sables in Morocco this past March and April. This is a 151-mile race run over 6 days across the Sahara Desert. Michael placed eighth overall and was the first American in a time of 18:44:49. And if that wasn't big enough, it was best finish ever by an American runner.
Michael will once again proudly represent the U.S. at the 100K World Cup and Championship in Torhout, Belgium this Friday, June 19. I know the Washington, DC area running community will be cheering on Michael and the entire USA team.
You can learn more about the world championships at the event website. You can also receive live updates on race day.
Happy running!
