We are knee-deep into the holiday season. Back in November, I offered 5 holiday-friendly tips for staying healthy this season. Have you been able to stay on track? Well, with the big holiday feasts happening all this week and next, you still have to remember your health.
For those of you traveling this week, you can still build physical activity into your travels. If you're traveling by plane, once you've gone through security and checked in, walk the terminal! Time spent sitting at the gate reading won't help you destress and burn calories the way walking will. Bring the kids because they need physical activity too. And wearing them out may just make for a better flight! If you're driving, break up those long trips with built-in walk breaks. Stop, stretch, and walk around the rest stop. Keeping your blood moving and energy up will make those drives a little less tedious.
Can't find time for a run this week? Well, take 5-minute breaks throughout your day and do a few lunges here, a few squats there, and throw in some push ups for good measure. What do you get? A full body workout throughout the day that keeps your energy up and your metabolism hopping.
Still holiday shopping? Walk the entire mall a few times in order to get some exercise in while doing your shopping. You can do the same thing when you're at the grocery store buying the ingredients for your feast.
It's feast time, now what? Well, never starve yourself in preparation for a big meal. Why? You will be absolutely ravenous when it's time to eat and will end up eating everything in sight. It's better to have healthy snacks throughout the day and eat only until you begin to feel full at your big feast. Take tiny bits of everything so you don't miss out on all the goodies, but don't overdo it.
Give yourself the gift of health by taking care of yourself. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy all the offerings of the season. Just like during the big race, you just need to pace yourself!
Happy running!
