When one thinks Studio City, hole-in-the-wall neighborhood bars are probably the last thing to pop into mind alongside Universal Studios, gargoyles shaped like the Seven Dwarves and drugstore cowboys. The Residuals, sharing a parking lot with a comic book shop in a quiet shopping center on Ventura Blvd. enjoys such anonymity and, to be true, revels in it.

Opened in 1986 as an idealized talk-shop for writers, actors, and producers both established and not to gather around a cold beer and a bowl of popcorn to discuss the day and the ‘biz, this cozy bar still holds some of that neighborhood Hollywood charm while its main crowd has given way moreso to the wayward NoHo Twenty-Something’s in place of the established industry heavyweights. But don't worry, rumor has it you can still get a beer in exchange for even the smallest residual check you receive!

Happily, The Residuals has avoided becoming part of the dreaded Hollywood scene; bartenders are chatty and welcoming, waitresses remember your name and order, cheesy 80s movies play on the television while the hi-tech jukebox blasts just about anything you can pay it to play. While there is no food on the menu aside from the complimentary bowl of popcorn, guests are able to order out (with menus supplied at the bar) or bring their own meal.

Leather booths, friendly wooden tables and ample bar seating keep the homey atmosphere alive and comfortable, and The Residuals frequently hosts live music (blues, rock, cover bands), trivia, sports on TV, and karaoke on Sundays. While you may not see any worldwide familiar faces here, you are sure to encounter some people in the ‘biz who are used to getting their hands dirty: gaffers, grips, PAs, wannabes, editors and all those hardworking individuals frequently foregoing infamy and recognition in order to be a part of the organic process of film and entertainment. Give The Residuals a visit and just try not to make a new friend. I dare you.
