The Blue Cafe: Where live music lives
Tucked back on an oft overlooked and forgotten (at least by those not native to the area) promenade in Long Beach sits The Blue Café, home to local musicians, salsa dancing, happy regulars, and friendly staff.
The tagline “where live music lives” does much to The Blue Café’s credit as they offer live music every night of the week; genres tending to stay within the confines of rock with every musical subgenre represented. They also offer hip-hop, electronica, and stand-up comedy nights peppered evenly throughout the month.
Clocking in at two full floors, the downstairs boasts a main stage, ample table and bar seating, as well as a small dance floor for those starry-eyed shoegazers, or booty shakin’ mamas (musical genre pending). The second floor is home to several pool tables and the Mariposa Salsa Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
To quench your thirst: Coors Light, Blue Moon, Pyramid Hefeweizen, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Red Trolley are somewhat proudly displayed on tap, as well as an ample selection of bottled beers (Coors, Miller, Bud, Sam Adams, Guinness, Rolling Rock, Red Stripe, Becks, Stella Artois). For those wishing to avoid carbonation, The Blue Café has a full liquor shelf operated by a nimble-fingered bartender.
Should you find yourself feeling a tad hungry, The Blue Café kitchen serves up standard burgers ‘n’ fries bar fare from 6pm-10pm on weekday evenings, open later on weekends.
As it resides right off of Pine and Broadway in downtown Long Beach, parking is fairly easy to come by, but may become scarce on busy weekends. Most garages in the surrounding area charge $6 for the night, but keep a wary eye out for metered parking and the rare, but ever so lovely, free lot.
Be sure to visit The Blue Café’s other venue in Huntington Beach, on the corner of Warner and PCH.
