Looking for energy saving light bulbs or for coffee produced in an environmental friendly way, IKEA Frisco is the answer. And take your own shopping bag. Earlier this year the home furnishing company eliminated its checkout use of plastic bags and introduced a blue $.59 reusable bag to its customers.

The shift was a success. The company calculates that 92% of its customers support the new reusable bag program, making it possible for IKEA to reduce the U.S consumption of plastic bags with 70 million a year. It is not a small thing. It is estimated that Americans consume 380 million plastic bags each year, of which about one percent is recycled.

The company is also putting $77 million into green technology, and is cooperating with WWF in the areas of responsible foresting, better cotton production and climate change. Most important, however, is that IKEA has proved that by taking environmental responsibility it is possible to change consumer behavior and thus make a real environmental impact.
