Energy security/climate change is the focal point in the new EU-US Energy Council launched last week in Washington.
“I want to see energy security and climate change center stage in all our partnerships around the world, and it is the right moment to step up our cooperation with the U.S.”, said EU Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
The new Energy Council seeks to deepen the bilateral energy cooperation between the European Union and the United States and will focus on Global Energy Security, Global Energy Markets, Energy Policies, and Energy Research.
“The Energy Council is a timely initiative in the context of growing global concerns on energy security and the important role that the energy sector has in climate change”, said EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
The EU and the U.S. are already cooperating in energy research on biofuels, carbon capture and storage (CCS), solar power, hydrogen-fuel cells, and in efforts to develop fourth-generation nuclear fission reactors. This cooperation is expected to be extended within the next years to include smart grids, energy efficient buildings, and advanced materials for energy applications.
Nonetheless, the EU-US Energy Council is not supposed to be a forum for climate change negotiations, but the Council says that climate change and energy are so fundamentally linked that consultations on energy matters will underpin efforts to tackle climate change.
