A solar project that partially powers San Benito’s water treatment facility is selected as Texas Renewable Project of the Year.

“It’s about time we put this hot Texas sun to work for us”, said Jerry Patterson, Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office. “If this project works as well as we think it will, it will stand as a practical example of the potential of solar energy in Texas”.

The 45 kW project is the largest solar-powered project on the Texas-Mexico border, and will provide about 10 percent of the power needed to daily filter the city’s 6 million gallons of water.

The project was installed by the Texas General Land Office, U.S Environmental Protection Agency and the city of San Benito.
