Sappho image at tinypic.comWomen & Children First, located at 5233 North Clark, is the most famous feminist bookstore in Chicago and one of the largest feminist bookstores in the country. The goal remains the same as when it first appeared in 1979 - to "promote the work of women writers and to create a place in which all women would find books reflecting their lives and interests."

On the third Saturday of every month is Sappho's Salon: A Provocative Night of Lesbian Diversions. The event is a monthly installment for lesbian women and their friends. Donation is $10. The event begins at 7:30 and includes wine and food.

Sappho's Salon has included a variety of performances such as short story readings, poetry readings, novel readings, musical performances, comedy acts and more.

Last year, I was lucky enough to be one of the readers for Sappho's Salon's debut. Now, on June 20, Sappho's Salon celebrates its First Anniversary Bash, featuring Gretchen Phillips. Phillips is celebrating the release of her album I Was Just Comforting Her.  Joining Phillips is Sappho's Salon house DJ SpinNikki.

Proceeds benefit the artists and the Women's Voices Fund .
