Equality Illinois has a mission - "to secure, protect and defend equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Illinois."
Many people were unable to attend the National Equality March. However, real change begins at home. With Equality Illinois, members of the LGBT community can get involved on a local level to help make full equal rights for the LGBT community a reality.
In Illinois, we have made significant ground with SB3186, which is a nondiscrimination bill. The bill protects against discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations and credit transactions based on sexual orientation. However, more work needs to be done.
Same sex marriage, for example, is illegal in Illinois. A group like Equality Illinois works to get same sex marriage in Illinois, but it also fights groups that oppose gay marriage. There are many other rights that the LGBT community is fighting for, like partner hospital visitation.
This Saturday, Women for Equality presents an event for LBT women and their friends. The event will take place at the Velvet Rope in Oak Park.
