New York actor/writer Darian Dauchan comes to TheaterWorks this week to perform his solo show Entertainer’s Eulogy.
The show spans almost a century and follows the rise and fall of three fictitious African American celebrities who are based on real life figures such as legendary vaudevillian performer Bojangles Robinson, soul singer Marvin Gaye, and boxer Mike Tyson. It also contains film that was shot in Los Angeles by Dauchan’s sister, a filmmaker, who has directed him in other projects.
A cautionary tale about the price of fame, the show focuses on the gifted and tragic side of each character. It also muses about how some people are destroyed by fame while others seem to integrate it into their lives in a healthy way. It also deals with the relationship between fame and excess. Performing the show in Elvis Presley’s home, in the wake of Michael Jackson’s death gives the show a few added layers of reality.
Dauchan has workshopped portions of Entertainer’s Eulogy at New York’s Roundabout Theater Company and the Classical Theater of Harlem. Memphis will be his first complete run. In November he’ll perform the show in Ithaca, NY at the Kitchen Theater Company’s Counter Culture Series.
Dauchan is from San Francisco and graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He’s been in New York ever since. ”This city really helped me appreciate what theater can do,” he says. He also helped start a collection called the Spoken Word Almanac Project (SWAP) at NYC’s Nuyorican Poet’s Café. SWAP is a live poetry and media event where performance poets recap news events from diverse perspectives. To see him perform a poem about Barack Obama click here.
