JC is heading back to the west coast, according to ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher, after the Warriors and Knicks completed a deal sending Crawford to Golden State in exchange for disgruntled 6-9 power forward Al Harrington.
Neither team has yet commented on the deal.
The trade separates the Seattle duo of Nate Robinson and Crawford, both Rainier Beach High School graduates.
Crawford spent one year at the University of Michigan before declaring himself eligible for the 2000 NBA Draft, where he was selected eighth overall by the Cleveland Cavs and traded on draft day to the Bulls. After four seasons with Chicago, he was traded to New York.
Last season, Crawford had his best year averaging 20.6 points and 5.0 assists. This season, the 6-5 shooting guard leads the Knicks in scoring, averaging 19.6 ppg in addition to his 4.4 apg.
Newly hired Knicks president Donnie Walsh has had interest in acquiring Harrington since his trade demand prior to the season. Walsh, who drafted Harrington to Indiana back in 1998 and then brought him back in a trade with Atlanta in 2006, believes he is the perfect fit up front in a Mike D’Antoni’s uptempo offense.
Harrington has played just five games this season, missing the past six with a back injury. He is averaging 12.4 ppg and 5.6 rpg. Harrington is a career 13-point scorer and averages just under 6 rebounds per contest.
Other motivation to bring in Harrington is the salary cap space freed up from Crawford’s departure. Crawford’s contract entails a player option through 2010-11, while Harrington’s contract expires after the 2009-10 season, giving the Knicks more leverage to go after, say, LeBron James.
