'Devote yourselves to prayer.' - 1 Corinthians 7:5
A classmate of mine recently shared that she turned her spare bedroom into a prayer room- a place where she would go to spend time with God, be it in prayer or paint journaling. The more I thought about it, the more I truly began to love her idea.
I have always had a creative side, aside from music. I love crafts, scrapbooking is a big favorite, and I am trying my hand at learning how to sew. For some time, I have dreamed of having a space designated specifically for my many projects. Though I have a 'craft closet,' it's a huge pain to drag everything out, set out up of the needed materials and then put it all away at the end of the day. When you don't have extra space, it's hard to leave things out for days on end.
When I heard my classmate's idea, I suddenly began to feel selfish in wanting to turn any extra space I may have in the future into a space for my stuff. She had turned her space into a place for God. Yes, God can and will meet us anywhere and everywhere- but the idea of having a space designated for spending time with Him is becoming more and more exciting to me. How wonderful it would be to have a specific place to go to spend time in prayer, to read the word, free from distraction. For me, a quiet place to work on music, keep my prayer journal, study and reflect would be amazing. Who's to say it has to stop there? There's no reason why I or anyone else couldn't spend time with God while working on projects- using the gifts He gave us so purposefully.
Why does spending this time with God matter? We are so, so busy these days- always on the go. Just as worship refuels my spirit for the week ahead, personal time with God refuels my spirit whenever I need it. God has no time limit- but we do. Our life on earth goes by in the blink of an eye. We were given this time to use at our discretion, and I don't know about you, but I want to use my time wisely.
My class instructor asked all of the students to answer this question: As a steward of time, discuss your personal commitment to keep daily and weekly “appointments” with the Lord. Do you need help in this discipline?
My answer was this:
I do have 'appointments' with God daily...some scheduled, many unscheduled. I always start my day off with some one on one time with the holy one in prayer, with devotions and daily bible reading. It's very casual for me, as I am usually still in my pajamas, with a cup of coffee- my morning coffee talk with the Father. Some people feel useless before their morning coffee- I say forget the coffee, I'm more useless without my morning time with God. I am in need of daily renewal of spirit- which leaves me more energized than any cup of coffee ever could! My unscheduled moments with God just seem to pop up, and when they do, I make a point to stop whatever I'm in the midst of and pray, pull out my bible and/or put on a worship song and just worship my King...how I love those unscheduled 'appointments'.
Friends, do you keep personal appointments with the Lord? Do you have a special place where you go to spend that time with God? It doesn't have to be an extra room- it can be a garden, the front porch, a prayer chapel, a rocking chair, the dining table (that's where it is for me!), beside a stream... anywhere you know will be quiet and meaningful. At no point in our lives will we ever reach a place of knowing all there is to know about God. Our zeal for God will overflow as we continue to build our relationships with Him through prayer and His word. Take the time to build that relationship, friends. Never stop seeking God, longing to know Him more. Come before the Lord with a transparent, hungry heart each new day, whether or not you meet Him in that quiet place.
Please feel free to share about how/where you keep your appointments with the Lord in our comment section.
