Monday, May 18th Meghan McCain (Senator John McCain’s daughter) appeared on the Colbert Report as a guest and revealed that she is pro-sex, pro-life, and pro-gay marriage, otherwise known as: she’s socially liberal. Which wouldn’t be note worthy…except that she’s Republican! And she supports sex!

In other news, pigs have flown.

Meghan McCain—in response to the abstinence-only views of most of the Republican Party—has publicly declared that abstinence doesn’t work for this generation (presumably hers—the twenty-somethings), and instead of focusing on delaying sexual activity until marriage, sex educators should emphasize disseminating information on birth control and other preventative measures. It seems every time I hear something from Miss Meghan McCain, I like her more.

Historically, one could argue that abstinence (or chastity) was usually a lauded idea but quite often failed in practice. It is only recently (Victorian era) that western society collectively decided procreation was the only proper purpose of sex and slapped sex and sexuality with a truckload of taboos. So, anyone who thinks promiscuity was invented in the 70s is sorely mistaken. Heck, some of the best erotica was written long before anyone even dreamed about the steam engine…

Ancient smut aside, increased access to- and knowledge about contraceptive measures doesn’t automatically increase sexual activity. Instead, it makes people more aware of the consequences of sexual activity and more likely to plan accordingly. Anytime sex and sexuality is more widely discussed and acknowledged, people make smarter choices because knowledge is readily available. Making sex an esoteric event that only the married or the randy moral degenerates can know about is the best way to ensure the teen pregnancy rate and prevalence of STDs soars. Meghan McCain seems to get this. I know the Republican Party is in somewhat of a state of flux right now, but—with ideas like these—I sure hope Meghan McCain finds a place somewhere near the top of it.
