I haven’t yet spoke of a woman guitarist, although I came across Debbie Davies and I really enjoy her music. Her sound is enticing and her style is definitive, she makes me proud to be a girl! With her strongly influential musical background, Davies embraces a lot when she thinks of music. She takes in to account her professional playing parents that used to encompass her childhood with anything from classical piano to discs on a turntable. Living in the 1960’s California era, Davies certainly had soul and emotions wrapped into her perspective of blues and music in general. Trying to stray from the always-assumed women guitarist only playing acoustic, Davies found her passion easily in the electric. Embracing the sounds of Eric Clapton and John Mayall, Davies slipped into her comfort zone and broke out from the ties of standard sounds. After spending time with Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs, an all girl band, Davies found herself along side Albert Collins in the Icebreakers. Davies states, “I stepped through a door into the real blues world when I joined Albert’s band.” Years later, Davies still has that beautiful world of blues running through her veins. With nine solo albums, two compilations and the numerous guitarists and blues artists that she has worked alongside, Davies certainly stands out among other women guitarists. Easily accomplishing her goal to breakthrough and not run with the crowd.
