Since living overseas, social media outlets such as Facebook have been my main source of staying in touch with my friends and family in America. Without normal face-to-face contact, I am starting to get skewed views of who these people are. I have noticed my friends' entries tend to mostly show only one side of their personalities and it has made me wonder, "Who am I on Facebook?". "Do my friends think I have turned into a farmer while abroad? Do they think that I have turned into a pessimist because I only report when something bad happens?"
To ease my mind and to find out what my Facebook identity is, I am working on a quiz to post to Facebook. Although I haven't gotten all of the questions worked out yet, here would be some of the results:
What is your Facebook "face"? You are:
The quiz taker:
You still secretly believe that MASH can tell you whether you will live in a Mansion, Apartment, Shack or House and you just love to relive those pre-teen years of sitting in the school halls and giggling about who your recent game said you would marry. You take so many of these facebook quizzes that some of your friends have blocked your feed. And I think you just added another quiz to the 5 you've already taken today.
The political activist:
Nobody is unsure as to whether you bleed blue or red. In fact, Rush Limbaugh is jealous of your ability to spin the daily political news. And you have even been de-friended online by some real life friends over arguments that have occurred through replies about articles that you posted. Good thing they are still your friends in real life.
The devoted parent:
Your distant friends and family coo over your recent album additions, and are jealous at the latest creations you are whipping up for dinner, and are wondering when you have time to have such interesting outings. But you are sometimes difficult to decipher because half of your posts are about how your kids are driving you crazy while the other half are about how crazy you are about your kids.
The networker
There are two types of networkers: social and professional. For the professional, Facebook is a tool to get the word out about your latest business happenings. For the social networker, Facebook is where you let everyone know where the biggest party is tonight. Both are good, but to answer the classic Facebook question, "What is on your mind?", is that all that is on your mind?
The novice
Your profile picture still resembles a mysterious outline like you are in the witness protection program and your profile still says, "I am trying to figure out this facebook thing!", which means that you never really figured it out and so you only skim Facebook whenever somebody writes you a note and there is a convenient link in your email to click.
The addict
You know you might have a problem when you refresh your newsfeed every couple of minutes to see what is new. Facebook is sucking your free time away (and a lot of your worktime, too!). To overcome your addiction, you are even thinking of holding Facebook Anonymous meetings but you can't think of an appropriate forum to meet in besides on Facebook.
What face do you show on Facebook?
