The Dodgers reportedly have offered left fielder Manny Ramirez a contract that would make him the second-highest paid player in Major League Baseball behind the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez. Ned Colletti is hoping it's an offer Manny can't refuse.
The contract, reported at $25 million a year for two or three seasons, would give the 36-year-old slugger a higher annual salary than the Mets' Johan Santana ($22.9 million/Yr) and just behind A-Rod's ($27.5 million).
"If you saw the bid, it's nothing that we're embarrassed by," Colletti said at the GM winter meeting in Dana Point.
The question remains whether other teams are desperate enough to bank on Ramirez into his 40s. His agent, Scott Boras, has been selling six-year contracts in Dana Point, saying that his client deserved to be paid until he was 42. At current market value, that would be a contract upwards of $150 million.
It appears that many big market teams aren't interested in a figure that high. Mets GM Omar Minaya has said that his focus will be on pitching -- likely meaning a run at C.C. Sabathia. The Yankees have planned on doing battle with the Red Sox for first baseman Mark Teixeira, who in most GM's eyes, is the best hitter on the market. Teixeira has more long-term valye and could land the biggest contract of this off-season. The Red Sox, obviously, aren't planning an offer for their former left fielder.
For now at least, the Dodgers are in a good position to land their bonus baby.
