ESPN's Peter Gammons reported today that the Dodgers inquired about free agent pitcher C.C. Sabathia, the 2007 Cy Young Award winner. No contract has been offered as of yet, but Sabathia's California roots make him a viable acquisition, even with the $140 million contract he's reportedly been tendered by the Yankees.
There has been speculation that Sabathia would scorn New York with a comporable offer from a California-based team. Sabathia grew up in Northern California and was in the same high school district as Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins. There were even rumors that Sabathia had purchased a home in Southern California, though that was later debunked.
Still, a C.C. signing would allow many a Dodger fan to forget the name Manny Ramirez -- or at least make his possible departure easier to swallow. The top of the rotation would feature two 200+ strikeout arms in Sabathia and Chad Billingsley with Hiroki Kuroda and Clayton Kershaw providing depth at the back end. In a division as deep in starting pitching as the National League West, a quartet like this will be essential to staying competitive in 2009.
But again, NO CONTRACT HAS BEEN OFFERED to C.C. Sabathia at this point. Nothing is official; just fueling the fire. This is Hot Stove season after all.
