As we celebrate our country’s independence with fireworks, parades and barbecues, let’s not forget all the men and women who have fought for the freedom that we enjoy. An appropriate outing for this weekend is a trip to a veteran’s memorial.

The Community Veteran’s Memorial in Munster gives visitors a look at the sacrifices of our soldiers and military personnel and honors the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The sprawling grounds of the 6.5 acre park include a shelter for ceremonies. Your self-guided tour starts you out about a century ago and engraved bricks offer bits of significant historical events in a timeline that winds around the path through the chronological account of the wars of the past century that have affected the U.S.

At the stops along the brick path, you’ll find sculptures, photographs etched into stone and markers that tell the story of the war. The sculptures sit between peaceful ponds and flower beds, making it a tranquil place to reflect.

Seven monuments make up the memorial: World War I, World War II – Europe, World War II – Pacific, World War II – Homefront, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf. Some involve machinery and aircrafts,

The memorial is located at 9710 Calumet Avenue in Munster, Indiana, 2 ½ miles south of I-80/94. For more information, visit www.communityveteransmemorial.org.
