Gary RailCat’s stadium was stop on Michael Jackson’s 2003 hometown visit
With the shocking death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, on Thursday, clips of his 2003 visit to his hometown of Gary are being seen on television and the Internet. One I’ve seen replayed is of Jackson marching onto the field of the U.S. Steel Yard, home of the Gary RailCats, a professional baseball team of the Northern League.
What could make a better summer staycation activity than enjoying America’s past time? The U.S. Steel Yard is a state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2002, with luxury skybox suites, a full-service restaurant, electronic scoreboard and a kid zone area. For those who love the game, you’ll find it a great value with most tickets priced at $10 or less. There are some great promotional games where giveaways include lunch boxes, baseballs, bats and beach towels.
Daily promotions for the season are: Dollar Mondays (hot dogs, popcorn, chips, sodas, programs and special merchandise for $1 and buy one ticket, get the second for $1), Baseball Card Tuesdays (a free player baseball card each Tuesday), Picture Pack Wednesdays (RailCats player photos for the first 1,000 fans, which players will sign on the concourse prior to the game), Thirsty Thursdays ($2 for 12 oz. drafts for Miller Lite & MGD for 21 & over fans), Fireworks Fridays (fireworks display every Friday), Giveaway Saturdays (premium giveaways each Saturday) and The Times Family Day Sundays (Four box seats, four vouchers good for hot dogs and sodas for $36 with Times coupon.)
The team has had a good record, reaching the championship series for the past four seasons and winning championships in 2005 and 2007. There’s not a bad seat in the house in this intimate stadium and mascots and interactive contests between innings add to the fun of a day at the ballpark. They also run a phenomenal baseball camp each summer where youths get to train on the field with RailCats players.
