Halloween is done, so it’s time to move on to Christmas. In Hammond, Indiana the Christmas season has begun. Last year, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the classic holiday movie A Christmas Story, the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond featured a display dedicated to the movie that is returning for another season called A Christmas Story Comes Home.
Opening today, the exhibit scenes include Higbee’s Department Store Window, Flick’s Tongue and the Triple Dog Dare, It’s a Major Award, Santa’s Mountain at Higbee’s, The Bumpus Hounds, and the Parker Living Room. The displays were first showcased in 2003 in the windows of the Herald Square Macy’s in New York City. The exhibit runs through January 10, 2010.
The movie has special signigicance to the city of Hammond. Jean Shepherd, co-author of the 1966 book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash that the movie was adapted from grew up in the Hessville area of Hammond, Indiana. The story is based on some events from his own childhood in the fictional town of Hohman. Hohman is actually the name of one of Hammond’s main streets.
Events for the 2009 holiday season have been scheduled and include a Festival Weekend on December 5 and 6, where visitors have the chance to meet and purchase personalized autographs with five cast members. The “Mommy’s Little Piggy” Eating Contest, the Write a Theme Contest – What I Want for Christmas, as well as the “Oh Fuuudge!” Tire Changing Relay will be held in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Visitors can also get pictures taken atop Santa’s Mountain on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas for $5. Fans of the movie will recall the “You’ll shoot your eye out” scene when Ralphie meets a department-store Santa.
