At first, they come by foot or on bikes, even on horseback, to enjoy the annual Holiday Festival of Lights at Griffith Park, Los Feliz district, which kicks off Monday, Nov. 24.
Later, in car-crazy L.A., nothing says Christmas as cheerfully, and wheelfully, as the Light Festival, now in its 13th year.
In keeping with the holiday spirit, Festival employees will be on hand to accept unwrapped gifts for the underprivileged.
Two-wheelers, in fact, take the advantage because the Festival's kickoff is titled Preview Bike Night, starting at 5 p.m. Nov. 24. It invites experienced and novice bikers to ride. Then it's vehicle-free days from Nov. 25 to Dec. 7, with walkers taking precedence.
Beginning Dec. 8, auto denizens can cruise the Crystal Springs Drive segment, but they also have the option of strolling along the one-mile path (wear comfortable shoes and dress warmly), passing through the brightly lighted Open Archway and drinking in countless Yule-themed and whimsical holiday light displays. The traditional route of driving, walking and weekend shuttles will run through Dec. 30.
There will be a mini-fair Dec. 5 through 7 featuring information on family activities, healthy nutrition and some tasty treats.
The Festival symbolizes the co-sponsoring Los Angeles Department of Water and Power history of bringing the festival to the citizenry.
Visitors can park at the L.A. Zoo parking lots on the south side of the festival near the merry-go-round or the lots near the pony rides. From the Golden State Freeway (5) take the Los Feliz offramp and go west toward the zoo and Festival entrance.
Festival hosts include local pols, the City of Los Angeles, L.A. Zoo, Department of Parks and Recreation, Autry Museum National Center, Department of Transportation, L.A. Visitors and Comvention Bureau, Automobile Club of Southern California, Los Angeles World Airports and CalTrans.
