Less than 50 miles north of Washington, D.C., area residents are preparing weapons and tools for this weekend's Civil War encampment and skirmishes.
On July 11 and 12, 2009, reenactors and living historians from around the area will participate in a Civil War encampment at Rose Hill Manor Park in Frederick, Maryland. This will be the 5th annual Civil War encampment at the historic site that brings to life events and customs Rose Hill Manor witnessed during the summer of 1863.
In 1863, Rose Hill Manor's grounds were used by the Union Artillery Reserve, commanded by Brig. General Robert O. Tyler. Members of the Artillery Reserve took part in the battle of Gettysburg on July 2 and 3.
After the battle of Gettysburg, soldiers and civilians set up makeshift hospitals in homes, schools and churches in the Frederick area for wounded soldiers and officers. Many of the wounded as well as Confederate prisoners of war were boarded on B& O trains to Baltimore medical and prison destinations.
In commemoration of those long ago historic actions, organizers have planned a variety of activities for the 5th Annual Rose Hill Manor Park Civil War Encampment:
