On September 29 Network Solutions launched the GrowSmartBiz Conference for small business owners and entrepreneurs. There were renowned small business leaders and well-known industry experts including keynote speaker Chris Anderson, and Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA).
Roy Dunbar, Chairman and CEO of Network Solutions, is focused on helping small businesses establish an online presence and market their products and services through the Internet. The seminar was grounded in a commissioned research study identifying correlations of small business competitiveness. Capital access is the most important correlation (33%), followed by marketing and innovation (23%).

Marketing and Innovation
Chris Anderson, Wired’s Editor-in-Chief and author of The Long Tail and Free, was the conference keynote speaker. His discussion was centered on how the internet enables a business to efficiently create and serve small communities by selling smaller quantities of more things to a few people around the globe. Then he projected the future outlook of business use of “freeconomics” - like Goggle who offers most of its products for free to grow their business. Both books are highly recommended for an entrepreneur's bookshelf in the 21st century.

Capital Access
Senator Mark R. Warner, former governor of VA, addressed the bank financing and health care cost issues for business owners. Access to capital is the largest contributor to small business competitiveness which was an appropriate topic from a government perspective. Senator Warner, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, was candid about the outlook on capital and cost.
Capitalism rules are needed and programs to spur more financing for those companies with track records (non-start-ups). In addition there is an equally great need to identify how best to address start-up business funding. The high health care cost burdening small businesses is an issue he is soliciting public ideas as they continue to drive toward an approach.
The day was packed with additional valuable information from panel discussions, small business quick-tips from experts, sponsor demonstrations, and networking.
