Beginning today and continuing all next week, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage presents Jazz in DC, a celebration curated by Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz Dr. Billy Taylor that highlights DC’s influence on the development of jazz.
Tomorrow’s (Nov. 22) performance will feature The New Washingtonians, an 18-piece big band directed by saxophonist Davey Yarborough that will take audiences on a musical tour of the early music of native Washingtonian Duke Ellington. Yarborough, a renowned musician was recently praised on CNN by Wynton Marsalis as his hero for using jazz to inspire young people. Yarborough will be joined on stage by his wife, amazing vocalist Esther Williams. When these two are on stage making music together it is truly an electrifying experience and something you don’t want to miss!
The Millennium Stage offers daily, free performances at 6 pm. Avoid paying for parking at the Kennedy Center and take the Metro to Foggy Bottom, then take the shuttle that runs every 15 minutes to the theatre. Look out for other articles throughout the week about upcoming Jazz in DC performances on Millennium Stage. Tomorrow, have a swinging good time and enjoy renowned musicians paying tribute to a man who paved the way for them.
