The Texas Transportation Institute released its 2009 Annual Urban Mobility Report today establishing the nation’s capital (PDF) as the No. 2 worst area for traffic and congestion. This is no surprise—DC has often come out on top of studies and surveys looking at the worst traffic conditions. In fact, DC was second place in 2007 in the preceding report. (Los Angeles is generally the victor. The study found Atlanta the winner for spot No. 3.)

I was first alerted to our city’s shining victory this morning sitting in traffic. After rolling my eyes (“Duh!”) I laughed.

So what does No. 2 mean? It means we spend 62 hours a year sitting in delayed traffic. 42 gallons of gas a year are “wasted” while we sit. The national average for waste time, and gas, is 51 hours and 25 gallons of gas.

And No. 2 means we’re the only city with the greatest increase: in 1982 DC spent 16 hours sitting in traffic.

Yuck. If anything means we need to rely on traffic more, and roads less, it’s this study.
