Metro released its ridership numbers for July 4, peaking at 499,549 at 10 p.m. and promised a final tally Monday morning. Get There is recording a total number of 447,576 trips.

598,898 trips were recorded for July 4, 2008. Do you think there were less trips because locals wants to avoid the crowds, were busy heckling the Real World cast in Dupont Circle, were hesitant to ride following the fatal Metro crash, or recalled the Inauguration Day disaster?

Metro closed the Smithsonian station on the Blue and Orange lines in anticipation of the large crowds. The Takoma station on the Red line was stated to remain open Friday and Saturday for similar reasons and will close tonight at 10 p.m.
