It seems too cold for Cherry Blossom season to start this weekend, but the theoretical proof that spring is here is forging on, despite the dreary weather DC residents have been forced to withstand this week. The blossoms guarantee crowds nonetheless. So you've been warned and reminded, DC.(Get There points out a silver lining: no track work this weekend!) Expect Blue and Orange trains to be packed. Expect some delays and general slowness, too. (Drivers will find similar characteristics at 14th Street and Constitution and Independence Avenues.) Because there will be so many people, Metro is operating more trains, with more cars, and extending hours. It's better to stay away, and Metro agrees:
Visitors should avoid traveling during the peak commuter periods from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., and are strongly encouraged to avoid traveling Metrorail at the height of the afternoon peak period, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Regular commuters, especially those who work for the federal government and whose offices are in the vicinity of the Smithsonian Metrorail station, which is the most popular station for tourists arriving at the National Mall, are urged to stagger their arrival and departure times for work and use all downtown Metrorail stations.
Regular commuters should allow extra time for travel, and are reminded when traveling on Metrorail to please walk into the center of the rail car and not block the rail car doors.
Everyone should keep in mind that the red line will be running on one rail all weekend.
As for visitors, Metro and I agree that you should get an all day pass ($7.80, all day on weekends and after 9:30 on weekdays). Stay to the right on stairs and escalators, and please, stand back from the platform.
You'll also need to pay for parking at Metro, and Meto will require that you purchase a SmartTrip card.
