A woman was struck by a train after she "ended up on the tracks" at Gallery Place/Chinatown Metrostation this morning. Metro's press release says that it's unclear how the woman fell to the tracks but ABC News and ABC 7 reported she was struck by the train. (Personally, I could see ABC News as incorrect.) The woman's injuries and status is unknown.
Trains are turning around and there WILL BE DELAYS. With any luck you won't notice because, Charlie Gibson reports, "It's very difficult getting around this city." (He also called Metrorail "exquisite!") From the WMATA press release:
Metrorail Red Line trains are turning back at Farragut North and Judiciary Square Metrorail stations after a woman ended up on the tracks at Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station. Riders can expect major delays while emergency personnel respond to the scene.
There is no Red Line train service at Metro Center or Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail stations. People should exit at Judiciary Square and Farragut North to walk to the National Mall.
Metro isn't speculating or specifying that the crowds pushed the woman over the track because of their large volume, but it is implied, and entirely possible. Metro reminds riders to stay two feet away from the platform.
Crowds are thick, people! Wait patiently for a train, you'll get there eventually. Please, no pushing.
Update! Service is back to "normal" this afternoon.
