In a press statement released by Gary Shaw according to New York Boxing Examiner Michael Marley, Shaw responded to this writer's scoop gathered from credible insiders about rumors of Vic Darchinyan pondering a move to Golden Boy Promotions. Marley wrote,
Shaw put out a press release Sunday to refute Indianapolis Boxing Examiner Dennis DSource Guillermo’s article which reported a rumor that Darchinyan was finishing up a contract with Shaw and might align with someone else.
“I don’t need a contract with Vic,” Shaw said. “I have a lifetime deal based on the fighter’s word and I accept that. I am going to Armenia in August as Vic’s personal guest because he wants me to see his country. There is no problem with us. Vic is very loyal to me.”
For all it's worth, I did not say there were any problems between Darchinyan and Shaw. All I reported were rumors conveyed upon me by very reliable sources regarding talks of Darchinyan pondering a possible move to GBP.
Darchinyan may very well stay with Shaw as I reported but by saying he did not a have a contract set-up with Darchinyan, Shaw did not really refute any of the rumors swirling around about Darchinyan's contract situation. Last time I checked, boxing is a business, and even the best of men breach contracts, what more breaching a contract that does not exist? I'm sure it's highly likely that Darchinyan would stay with Shaw, but until there is no binding contract between both men, Darchinyan is still fair game for anyone and anything can happen.
Unless Shaw can read Darchinyan's mind and hears and sees every single thing Darchinyan's camp talks about, then there really is no solid refutation that was accomplished.
As much as I would like to take Gary Shaw's word for it, I can't help but realize he still is a promoter after all. Promoters typically say what's favorable for them. Even the best promoters in the game like Bob Arum and Oscar De la Hoya aren't exceptions to this fact. Remember how much De la Hoya was hyping Victor Ortiz last Friday in ESPN Friday Night Fights to the point that he was saying Ortiz was more exciting than Manny Pacquiao? Let's put it this way, if your life depended on promoters to tell the absolute truth then it's safe to say you would have been dead a long time ago. They're promoters, not saints.
And the fact that Gary Shaw said there was nothing personal behind him not allowing his ward Darchinyan to fight Donaire. Okay, do I really need to quote all the personal stuff he has said against Nonito in the past and how he would not allow Nonito to make a dollar off Darchinyan among other things?
Truth be told a rematch between Darchinyan and Donaire now will make more money than putting Darchinyan next to almost anybody else unless that other person's name is Manny Pacquiao. And I know Darchinyan isn't getting paid 2 million dollars to fight King Kong Agbeko either. Darchinyan can make money elsewhere too, but why not want to avenge the only loss in your record since he's never stopped belittling Donaire anyway. Fans have been asking for the fight and Shaw is roosterblocking it. Why?
People aren't easily swayed by promoters and writers though. Fight fans know their boxing, and in this case. they already know what this is all about. Vic Darchinyan and Nonito Donaire will not happen because __________. (Fight fans, fill in the blank).
