On Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback stadium, the match-up between Arkansas and South Carolina will be all about defense – no matter which team you’re rooting for.

The Gamecocks come to the Hill with a better defense statistically than Alabama and Ole Miss, who both gave quarterback Ryan Mallett fits and ended in losses for the Razorbacks. The Gamecocks are allowing 294.7 yards and 19 points per game, and their strength is in defending the pass – allowing only eight touchdowns in nine games. Keep your eye on linebackers Eric Norwood (54 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions) and Shaq Wilson (team-high 58 tackles) – they will no doubt be playmakers for the Gamecocks come Saturday.

As for the Razorbacks, defense has been the big question mark all year for Hog fans. How does the Razorbacks defense sack Florida quarterback Tim Tebow six times one week, and the next week completely forget how to tackle against Houston Nutt’s Ole Miss Rebels? Defending the pass and big plays have been a problem for the Hogs on defense, and head coach Steve Spurrier will bring his playbook full of big plays if he’s watched any film at all on the Razorback secondary. The Gamecocks like to throw the ball just like the Razorbacks, and quarterback Stephen Garcia has thrown for 300 yards three times this season, with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also been sacked 24 times – the most in the SEC.

Will Razorback fans finally be chanting “free Willy,” or will Spurrier be throwing his visor on his way out of Razorback stadium? Stay tuned.
