Antigua Literary Festival: Books and Beaches
Combine your love for a crystal white sand beach and a good novel and reserve your tickets now for the Antigua and Barbuda International Literary Festival. The festival, November 7-9, is the brainchild of Baltimore Times publisher Joy Bramble and her sister Pam Arthurton, whose family settled in Antigua after their native land of Montserrat, was devastated by volcanic activity.
The goals of their festival became to inspire Antiguans and Barbudans with a sense of their literary history, to celebrate local and regional artists, and to raise funds to support the Antigua & Barbuda Library, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1974. At the same time, to create an attractive and sustaining festival they knew they would have to involve the international literary community.
Now in its third year, the Festival has a stellar list of 37 authors participating including: Carol Mackey-Editor in Chief of Black Expressions Book Club, E. Ethelbert Miller-literary activist and award winning poet, Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison, and Grenadian children’s author and poet Dawne Allette.
The Jolly Beach hotel is sponsoring the event and offering an excellent 4 night/5 day package including accommodations, full Festival entrance, all meals and house brand drinks, airport transfers, hotel taxes and service fees for $802.00 per person based on double occupancy.
Among the specific activities planned for the 2008 Festival are:
· Youth Day, where talented young writers attend workshops led by noted authors
· Two days of workshops on the practical aspects of writing as well as lively discussions on timely literary topics by panels of authors and publicists
· Author readings on the beach
· A Gala Opening Ceremony and reception attended by the Governor General, Prime Minister and government officials of Antigua as well as the authors and Festival participants
· A book sales area sponsored by Best of Books, where participants can obtain books to be signed by the authors
In addition, this year the Festival has added the Jolly Harbour Festival Village sponsored by La Perla International. It’s free and open to the public, and will offer:
· Authors’ Tent with readings and book signings scheduled throughout the two days
· Western Union Children’s Tent, with readings by authors and Antiguan personalities as well as magic shows and intermittent raffles giving children Best of Books’ gift certificates
· Food Demonstration Tent for our cookbook authors and noted island chefs to do cooking demonstrations
· Live entertainment on stage
· Book sales tent staffed by Best of Books
· Literary Festival Tent, where people can complete entries for the Festival Raffle
· Food vendors
· Sponsor booths, where our sponsors will distribute information and do giveaways
· Live broadcast from the event in cooperation with Observer Radio
