The King of Pop is dead, but his prodigious style is more alive than ever. Michael Jackson was known not only for his incredible voice, but also for his glitz, glamor, and fearless love of anything that shimmered. Designers have taken it upon themselves to pay homage to the King and his resplendent style with dazzling collections filled with sequins, studs, burnished embellishments, and enough gold to make the Gold Rush look like a fool's errand.
Some memorable Michael Jackson pieces include his red leather jacket and pants from the Thriller video, his glittered Sgt. Pepper's-style jacket he wore to the American Music Awards in 1984, the too-short tux and white socks from his Bilie Jean video, and most importantly his single white glove.
Luckily, these pieces have been on and off the fashion radar for decades, so finding similar items at second hand shops will not be hard. To avoid looking like an '80s flashback, ignore multi-colored sequined/beaded items. Instead, stick with solid colors, preferably gold or silver. The ultimate find is undoubtedly a sequin blazer because it is easily dressed up or down. A chic fedora and a pair of patent leather loafers, are easily incorporated into any wardrobe and can tie together an outfit with an extra dash of flare.
The best part about dressing so decadently, is the insignificance of the rest of your outfit. Every other part of the outfit essentially becomes a frame for the sparkle, so keep it simple with a black skirt or pair of pants, and minimal to no accessories, single white glove excluded. Why bother with rings and things, when all you need is attitude and the need to groove.
