From Balmain to Calvin Klein, it's clear that the new formula for footwear is the more ornamentation the better.  The embellished stilettos making their way down this year's runways are nothing short of works of art. It's hard not to covet such inspired footwear, but the price tags attached to these artful creations have certainly kept them out of the hands of budget shoppers.  However, with a little creativity and a quick trip to your local craft store, you too can create your very own pair of haute couture stilettos.

Nearly everyone is guilty of harboring at least one pair of plain-Jane pumps or strappy sandals that rarely see the light of day simply for being too ordinary or uninspired.  Now is the time to unleash your creative genius and turn those ordinary heels into bona fide art for your feet.

A few suggestions for this craft project:

  • Use that bedazzler that has been hanging around in your closet since the 90s
  • Buy a couple packs of stick-on rhinestone designs
  • Find a bottle of neon fabric paint to create a pair of eye-catching Day-Glo heels
  • Add peacock or pheasant feathers
  • Add studs
  • If you are quite artistic, design a pair of heels inspired by your favorite artist
  • Add puffy-paint accents for a bit of a quirky accent
  • String together some beautiful beads and attach them over any straps or as an outline on the shoe
  • Hot glue rhinestones all over the heel

The options for this DIY project are absolutely endless.  The whole point is take something plain and revamp it into your own original masterpiece.  Have fun and wear your creations with pride!
