Summer has arrived and now it's time to expose those appendages to the warm summer sun. For one season out of the year, it becomes appropriate, and seemingly necessary, to shed all of those cumbersome layers donned to survive the rain and snow, and replace them with short shorts and sleeveless tops.

Whether you are tired of last year's styles, or your shorts just don't seem to fit right anymore, anyone can find an excuse to splurge on a new summer wardrobe.  Nevertheless, summer lasts for only three months out of the year (if you live in a region with four seasons), so breaking the bank for some flip-flops and shorts seems a bit unnecessary.

Here is a list of completely interchangeable and weather appropriate pieces for the summer season:

  • Black spandex knee-length bike shorts (shiny or matte)
  • Brightly-colored tee (v-neck or scoop neck)
  • Linen tunic tank (plain or embellished)
  • Jean shorts (cut-off or cuffed)
  • Summer sweater (v-neck or cardigan)
  • Sundress (brightly colored or floral print)
  • Mini-skirt (form-fitting or frilled)
  • Corset top (solid or printed)
  • Slouchy "boyfriend" style pants (jeans or chinos)
  • Blazer (black or colorful)

Each of these pieces can be found at any number of thrift stores or inexpensive retailers, can be paired with another item on the list, and a few items are appropriate for any season, creating one of the most versatile and budget-friendly wardrobes.  Pair the corset, slouchy pants, and blazer for a classic date night outfit, or the mini-skirt, tee, and bike shorts for an 80s-inspired ensemble.  The possibilities are endless.
