As a recent guest speaker at San Francisco State University (topic: "Business and career lessons they never teach you in college,") and an attendee at the International Association of Business Communicators mixer, I had the pleasure of advising bay area university students. These talented students from SFSU, UC Berkeley, and Santa Clara University were extremely eager to get out into the workforce and make a positive impact in the corporate world. But underneath their starry-eyed excitement and enthusiasm, many expressed fears and concerns. Some questions asked:
"In this economy, what industries should we focus on other than food, alcohol, and tobacco?"
"I'm shy. How do I work the room at these networking events?"
"What do you do when you have a really, really mean boss who is on everybody's good side?"
"What else should I be doing to make sure I'm setting myself up for success after I graduate?"
The energy and vibrance of these inquisitive future young professionals was phenomenal! It is the very same reason why I write for this column. By connecting San Francisco's young urban professionals with networking events, career advice resources, and social events in the city... it is my hopes that this column and my career advice presentations make sailing the real world just a tad bit easier for readers like you.
