Bobby Santos III remains red-hot at Richmond
There’s no hotter driver in the country than Bobby Santos III. The Franklin, MA native took a USAC National Sprint and National Midget feature each last week, and backed that up on Friday night with
another USAC National Sprint victory in the Rotondo Weirich Showdown at the 3/4-mile paved oval at Richmond International Speedway in Virgina.
Santos had to work for to take home the 60 lap feature, rallying from a poor qualifying effort that left him starting 13th in the 17-car field. He quickly moved his car up to fifth-place by the mandatory refueling red flag on lap 30, and then continued his march through the field after the restart, eventually passing pole sitter Brad Sweet on lap 44 for a lead he would not relinquish.
Levi Jones took over the USAC National Sprint series points lead with an eighth-place finish, giving him a two point lead over previous points leader Dave Darland, who finished ninth.
In other Friday racing action:
Danny Smith won the
All Star Series Ohio Speedweek race at Limaland Motorsports Park on a night that saw more than its fair share of lead changes. Smith, Brock Mayes, Tim Shaffer and Rob Chaney all lead in the early stages before Smith was able to pick his way through lapped traffic and claim the lead for good on lap 17 at the 1/4-mile dirt oval.
Joey Saldana took his World of Outlaws series- leading 11th victory of the season with a feature win at
the Missouri High-Banked Nationals at U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn. It was Saldana’s first win at the event in three attempts, having finished 11th in 2006 and eighth in 2007. (The event was cancelled due to weather last year.)
Matt Gilbert passed Scott Allen with two laps remaining and held on for his first career feature win at the Midwest Outlaw Sprint Series event at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, MO.
The weekly sprint car race at Silver Dollar Speedway scheduled for Friday night was
cancelled early in the morning by track promoters, citing that “the conditions of the new track surface have been compromised and it is for the safety of the competitors and spectators that races have been cancelled.” Internet reports have suggested that the track’s dirt had too many rocks to be considered safe, and new dirt is being brought in for next week’s Golden State Challenge doubleheader.
