Right now, there’s no question that Joey Saldana is the hottest driver in the sprint car world. The pilot of Kasey Kahne’s Budweiser car has won three of the last four World of Outlaws feature races, including a sweep this weekend at the Boot Hill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas.

Saldana used the high side to drive past Jason Meyers after a restart on lap seven and didn’t look back on Friday night to win the preliminary feature. His win on Saturday was far more adventurous – he had to wait out a three-hour rain delay that came as Saldana was leading on lap seven.

After waiting out the delay, Saldana’s and his team was then pressed into action when they had to perform a quick engine change after his motor blew up during hot laps run before the resumption of the feature. The need for a motor change eliminated any chance Saldana’s team had to make changes, and he admitted after the race that he probably didn’t have the best car on the track for the rest of the night.

In fact, Donny Schatz eventually caught Saldana in the closing laps of the 30-lap feature as the duo got into traffic after Saldana had pulled out to a large lead after the restart. Schatz was able to get alongside Saldana late, but couldn’t not complete the pass at the line, falling short by just 0.018 seconds. Sam Hafertepe, Jr. finished third after a hard crash on Friday, while Tim Kaeding and Tony Bruce, Jr. rounded out the top five.

On Friday night, it was Saldana who was the rabbit chasing the hare, as he made a pass on Meyers and then drove away from the pack despite concerns about mud packed in a front tire. Meyers finished second, while Brian Ellenberger finished a career-best third.

With the pair of wins, Saldana vaulted from fourth to second in the World of Outlaws series points after picking up his series-leading ninth and tenth wins of the season, while Schatz maintained his points lead.
