In a wild finish to Indiana Midget Week, Bryan Clauson passed Dave Darland on a restart three laps from the finish and held on to take the series finale at Kokomo Speedway on Sunday night to overtake third-place Brad Kuhn for the series title. Darland went low to block Clauson, who took the high line to make the pass that gave him the series title over Kuhn by eight points.
The feature was marred by a lap three crash that saw Jerry Coons Jr., Brad Sweet and Chad Boat all get upside down. The incident appeared to start when Boat got sideways in a corner into Sweet as they both flipped, collecting Coons Jr. in the process. Coons Jr. was able to continue on and finished eighth, while Sweet and Boat were knocked out of the race but otherwise uninjured.
Henry Clarke and Zach Daum were also unhurt in a crash on lap 27. Ricky Ehrgott was lucky to escape a bad crash in qualifying that involved him getting upside down multiple times. Ehrgott was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for observation but was treated and released.
Darren Hagen lead the first three laps before being passed by Darland. It was an extremely racy track, with three and four grooves at certain points during the race.
Although Kuhn lost the Hoosier state title, his third place finish was enough to give him the lead in the USAC National Midget Series standings, as he took a 21-point lead over Coons Jr.
Coons Jr. came back from his problems in the midget race to take a healthy victory in the Kokomo Speedway weekly sprint car series feature.
Other USAC racing results from the weekend:
Garrett Hansen was able to take advantage of a rare mistake by Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams and several incidents to become the USAC/CRA series eighth winner in as many races on Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
Hansen’s win wasn’t without controversy. After a John Aden flip on the initial start brought out a red flag, front row sitters Hansen and Danny Sheridan collided going into turn four, with Sheridan getting sent into a series of violent flips. Sheridan did more than walk away from the crash: he ran to the front straight to confront Hansen as the cars sat during a red flag.
Williams took the lead from Hansen on the next restart, and led for the first five laps before running over the inside berm, losing speed and letting Hansen get around him for the lead. Mike Spencer finished second while David Cardey assumed the series points lead by coming from 11th to third.
Danny Faria finished fourth in exciting fashion, making a last lap pass on Williams that ended with Williams making contact with another car while taking evasive action and sliding across the line just behind Cory Krusman.
In action at Madera (CA) Speedway, Tanner Swanson passed Jeremy Rodela for the USAC Western Midgets feature event win, while Jeff Oleen used a late pass on series points leader Nick Romano for the victory in the California Ford Focus Pavement Series.
Bradley Galedrige led all 25 laps for a convincing victory in the USAC Regional Midget feature at Berlin Raceway in Berlin, MI.
