The sprint car racing season is coming to a close in torrid fashion, with several major championships yet to be decided. This weekend promises to be one of the most active and exciting in recent memory, with several big-time races and series crowns to be decided.
For a national audience, all eyes will be on The Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina for the World of Outlaws World Finals. The three-night event brings to a close the tightest points race in World of Outlaws history, with three-time defending series champion Donny Schatz leading Jason Meyers by just 19 points. And unlike weather problems that plagued earlier nationally televised races from Knoxville and Williams Grove, forecasts call clear and sunny skies.
Meanwhile, other national series will have major races this weekend as their title chases wind down. The ASCS sprint cars roll into I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas this weekend for the Short Track Nationals. Rescheduled from last weekend due to rain, a strong field looks to break last year’s record of 108 cars entered, all chasing a $15,000 first prize for the Saturday night feature.
Finally, the USAC National Sprint Series starts their season-ending California swing with the 14th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway. Two-time Oval Nationals champion Dave Darland comes into the three-night event holding a 27-point lead over Levi Jones heading into the penultimate event of the season. Meanwhile, Mike Spencer is only eight points ahead of David Cardey in the USAC/CRA standings, with just 83 points separating the top four drivers.
