Pretty good under the radar re-signing for the Capitals as it has just recently been announced that Boyd Gordon has re-signed for $761,000 for one year.

I would have liked to see a little longer deal as Gordon is one of those players you really don’t appreciate until late in the game.

Gordon’s faceoff percentage is one of the highest on the Caps at 56.1 percent and along with David Steckel, Gordon is one of the Capitals frontline forwards on the penalty kill. It is in this area that Gordon becomes a true asset, as he along with Steckel are great at clearing the puck, staying in constant motion, and sacrificing the body to block shots.

In essence this means that Boyd is everything you need from a 3rd/4th line forward and someone who at the very least does slightly more to help than hurt you in the end.

This is not to say that Gordon doesn’t sometimes have problems. Occasionally he gets lost in plays and if Boyd makes a mistake he usually doesn't have the speed against elite forwards to make up for it.

In game 5 of overtime in the playoffs against the Penguins, Gordon was too far up in the Penguins zone on the waning moments of a Pittsburgh power-play. With Malkin racing up ice Gordon was nowhere insight as Pittsburgh would score the game-winning goal with only Tom Poti defending against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin

With that said though, mistakes like that for Gordon were somewhat rare, and at 25 there is no reason to think that with more talented line-mates that the previously released Donald Brashear, Gordon couldn’t develop a slightly improved offensive game as well, like David Steckel.

Capitals notes:

People talk about New York being a tough environment, but less than two full seasons into his tenure, Bruce Boudreau with the firing of Manny Acta is now the longest serving current coach in D.C. Anyone want to argue that he isn’t the best?

You could say that Boudreau and the Capitals patient approach to building the team up, is one of the reasons the team is an island of stability in what right now is a very rocky Washington sports environment.

-One more baseball note. With the horrible play of the Nationals this year, last night’s baseball all-star game is actually significant for Capitals fans. Hockey season starts right around the time that baseball season ends in early October. We’re more than halfway through Capitals fans! Our long Nationals nightmare (Get it?) may soon be over!
