With an NHL leading 56 goals and and 54 assists last year, Alexander Ovechkin isn't stopping anytime soon, and on the way he's taking home more "ice" than Michael Phelps.
Yesterday the "Great 8" became the MVP for a second consecutive season, a feat that has not been accomplished since Dominik Hasek did it in 1997 and 1998. He competed against Evgeni Malkin and Pavel Datsyuk for the Hart trophy and while Malkin may have had more points, Ovechkin has carried the Caps for an entire year.
Ovechkin aslo took home the Pearson Trophy for the second consecutive year, which is given to the player voted by NHL players to be the best. But while the additional medals might be nice, Ovechkin clearly would trade all his trophies for the one Malkin currently has. Click below to watch his acceptance speech.
In a bit of an upset, Mike Green despite being only the 8th defender in NHL history to score over 30 goals, did not take home the Norris trophy. That trophy given to the NHL defender who shows the best all-around ability, was given to Bruins defender Zdeno Chara. I have to say I think that is fair. There is no one in the NHL who is as dynamic a goal scorer from the backline, than Green but he still has to work on his defense game. I see Chara right now as still the best one-on-one defender in the NHL, while Green still needs a bit of work in this area.
Big news!
I will be interviewing the man who I consider to be one of the greatest owners in sports, Ted Leonsis. The interview takes place Tuesday so I will have all of that for you on Tuesday night. Send me an e-mail or write a comment if there is anything you want me to ask.
