Stephenson picks Cincy, saga finally over
Cincinnati emerged from virtually nowhere to land the talented but troubled high school phenom from New York, which makes complete sense with the way his recruitment played out along the way.
He was originally set to join Kansas only to lose his spot to Xavier Henry, who decommitted from Memphis when head coach John Calipari left for Kentucky.
Maryland and Arizona eventually emerged as likely landing spots, and Florida International, led by new head coach Isiah Thomas, even became involved at one time.
The Terps were said to be one of the teams in the running for Stephenson for many months now, although the committment from both sides was rumored to have wavered numerous times.
I'm sure the Terps and head coach Gary Williams aren't too devastated by the news and are happy to finally see this saga come to an end. While he could have been a key piece to a very good team in 2009, he also could have been a complete headcase and caused major disruptions to the team's chemistry.
It would have been interesting to watch Stephenson at Maryland, but maybe for all of the wrong reasons. The experiment could have had disastrous results, so the safe route was definitely moving forward without him.
