The Maryland Terrapins basketball team fell just short of the Top 25 in the USA Today/Coaches poll, checking in at No. 26.

Most publications and polls have the Terps somewhere between No. 20 and No. 25 in the country coming into the season.

It's a good sign for a team that has struggled just to make the tournament almost every year since winning the national championship in 2002.

Much of the hope is center around a stable roster, which returns everyone except senior graduate Dave Neal. The team has even managed to bring in two post players in freshmen David Padgett and Jordan Williams.

Still, the Terps will lean heavily on their backcourt, most specifically Greivis Vasquez, who has the chance to win the ACC Player of the Year award. As long as Vasquez can keep his head on straight, he should have a big year.

Head coach Gary Williams was very fond of last year's team and I'd expect similar expectations of this year's group.

The Terps won their first exhibition game and start the regular season on November 13 against Charleston Southern.

This is the most excited Terps fans have been about their basketball team and even the overall program in a quite a few years. Hopefully, the team can meet or even exceed all of those expectations and make it an interesting year to follow the Terps.
