The Maryland Terrapins football team is still coming to play with their best effort each week but it's really painful watching them lose game after game.
Coming into the season, it was expected that the Terps would have to fight just to be bowl eligible because of all of the youth on the team. However, a season like this was not on anyone's mind.
It's gone so bad that the calls to fire head coach Ralph Friedgen are growing louder and stronger with each loss. I can't say that I blame the fans and boosters who support the football team through both their monetary contributions and by showing up at the stadium each week.
The inability to develop a solid quarterback since the days of Scott McBrien has been a main point of contention, and I can't say that I disagree. The offense has been hard to watch and unimaginative at best, and a lot of that falls on Fridge.
It's a tough call to make, but it really might be time to thank Friedgen for all he has done and cut him loose.
It's hard to get excited about the James Franklin era, but the Terps are forced into naming him the head coach unless they are willing to pay his $1 million buyout.
The Terps would be better off trying to land a coach like Lane Kiffin, who has injected a crazy amount of energy and attention into the Tennessee football program. Maryland isn't Tennessee, so it won't be that easy, but landing a young coach who can energize the program and recruit the heck out of people would be the right way to go.
Brian Billick, Jon Gruden, etc are coaches that should be contacted. Obviously, a lot of these guys would not be interested in Maryland's mediocre football program, but it's worth giving them a call just to make certain that's the case.
The football program is in desperate need of an infusion of excitement and energy, and that all begins with the head coach.
