For Maryland, the season is on the line this Saturday when they travel to Duke to face the Blue Devils.
A win keeps the Terps in the thick of the ACC Atlantic race. A loss essentially puts them out contention, severely hurts their bowl chances, could lead to a downward spiral the remainder of the season and would put a major black mark on the program.
For years, Terps fans have laughed at the Duke football program while impatiently waiting to see their name pop back up on their schedule. The team finally gets a chance this year to embarass Duke, yet Maryland finds itself a six-point underdog. Now that's embarassing.
For Ralph Friedgen, this game could also go a long way in determining his fate at the end of the season when his job status will be re-evaluated. A victory might not save his job, but a loss could certainly seal his fate into early retirement.
If Friedgen were smart, he could save his job and some face as well as put the program on the fast track to rebuilding by giving the young kids playing time. That means benching guys like Chris Turner and finding out whether or not any of the underclassmen can really play.
Either way, Saturday will prove to be an important game for the Terps and their fanbase. The only question is, will it be for all of the right or wrong reasons?
